Proper societal etiquette of the era dictated that women remain at home, yet there were those pioneering souls who seized this rare opportunity to serve their country in multifaceted ways. The women of the Civil War not only confronted enemy soldiers on the battlefield but also bravely challenged the restrictive traditional expectations imposed on 19th-century gentlewomen. This engaging program offers guests a unique opportunity to experience the considerable hardships and significant challenges faced by these extraordinary “Lady Warriors.” Please allow an hour for this program.
Bloomers: A Fashion Revolution
Indian Creek Historical Fashions Presents: “Bloomers. A Fashion Revolution.” This marks a truly revolutionary style change for women that fundamentally transformed the landscape of women's fashion during the mid-19th century. In this engaging and informative program, you will learn about a significant early change in women’s fashion that ignited a tremendous scandal across the nation. In the 1850s, pants were boldly introduced into ladies' wear in America, challenging the deeply entrenched norms of the time. This audacious new freedom from the long, voluminous skirts that were commonplace in that era allowed women to move with greater ease and comfort, and it ultimately revolutionized the way women perceived and approached fashion conventions, particularly for those brave enough to embrace the new bloomers. Discover how these courageous revolutionaries fought valiantly against restrictive social norms to provide women with greater choice and autonomy in their outerwear.
