Costume Chaos

Another common source of bloopers in our living history programs comes from the costumes themselves. We work hard to create authentic Victorian garments, but with so many layers and intricate designs, mishaps are bound to happen. There was one memorable historical fashion show where I had numerous gowns on display. The carpet was thick so my dress forms didn't sit well. My daughter stepped in to hold up one of my forms. As I finished my talk, she stepped behind me to move my large hoop gown. As she picked up the form, the bottom came off. I had no idea the chaos erupting behind me. These moments remind us that while we strive for authenticity, and professionalism, we’re also here to celebrate the joy of history and the unexpected fun that comes with it. No matter how carefully we prepare, there’s always a chance for a little comedy during our presentations.
